Since December 9, Mallorca now has a legally constituted users association for the Linux operative system. The
new association called
BULMA (Greenhorn Users of Linux in Mallorca and Surroundings) is comprised of a group of young
computer enthusiasts, mostly students of the Balearic University UIB. The basic aims of the association are the information and
promotion of the freely distributed Linux software, the support and the organisation of user groups and developers of Linux, and the
promotion via courses, congresses, etc., of the access to the operative system GNU-Linux, and other applications related to the
GNU project.
According to Javi Polo, president of BULMA, last Tuesday December 21, the first official dinner of the association was organised.
The web for BULMA offers details about the association and the projects it has and also full information, regularly updated, about
linux and the free software in general.
Linux is an operative system of the type Unix written initially by
Linus Torvalds (Department of Computer Science, University of
Helsinki) assisted by a group of hackers via Internet. It is a multiuser system with real multitasks, and is in constant evolution, each
week incorporating something new to the system. The central part of Linux is distributed via the General Public Licence GNU, which
means that it can be freely copied changed and distributed, but it is not possible to impose additional restrictions to the products
obtained and the source code must be available, just the same as the Linux code.
