The
GOB has presented a new campaign with the slogan "Mallorca at its
limit. It's time to stop" it intends to stabilise the capacity of
accommodation and building, to stabilise the number of tourists that
visit us, to obtain a rational and sustainable administration of the
natural resources and not to build large transport infrastructure
(motorways, a new runway at the airport, ports..)
According to the ecological organisation "the present situation of
realestate and residential expansion has reached absolutely exaggerated
landmarks causing an obvious saturation of the natural resources and the
collapse of the most important infrastructure. This situation is
manifest by determined facts such as during the last three years the
number of residential places that has received visas from the official
colleges has been over 40,000 per year or that the increase in number of
tourists is about 5%, that is between 400,000 and 500,000 people more
each year. On the other hand, the consumption of water increases each
year approximately 7%, the power consumption between 8 and 12% and
during 1999 the production of waste increased 9.4%.
With this campaign the GOB intends to open a debate within society and
at the same time to lobby the institutions on the changes to be
introduced and the measures to be adopted to detain this growth. In
this line, all kinds of activities will be organised, informative,
promotional, vindicating and debates.
