The
Federació Balear d'Escacs is organising the
I Open Internacional Illa de Mallorca, that will take place from December 2 till
10, at the Urbanización Maioris Décima in Llucmajor.
The new tourney starts with a view to continuity and hopes to become one of the principal gatherings of this kind that are
carried out throughout Spain. The organisers remember that in the 80s different International events were organised (Can
Picafort, Cala d'Or, Platja de Palma), but no similar contests have been held for over 10 years on the islands.
Amongst the players who have confirmed their participation is the Menorcan: Francisco Vallejo Pons (1982), present world
champion sub-18, and number 3 in the absolute Spanish ranking.
The prizes amount to 2.000.000 pesetas and this is one of the highest for international contests held in Spain and the world.
