Yesterday, Monday 13, the Balearic President, Francesc Antich, received
the president of GESA, Bartomeu Reus at the Consolat de la Mar. The
latter declared at the end of the meeting that he had informed President
Antich about the possible rise in the cost of energy on the Islands by
some 40%, due to the "liberalisation" of the energetic market and the
fusion Endesa-Iberdrola. Both Antich and Reus agreed to claim from the
central government norms and investment to counteract the insular
condition.
GESA, a company that belongs to the Grupo Endesa Iberdrola, that
produces and distributes "exclusively" the electric energy for the
Balearics, is negotiating the authorisation to build a new power centre
at Son Reus, next to the Incinerator plant.
The GOB has asked the Balearic Government not to authorise the new power
station. The ecologists consider that it is not logical to authorise
the construction of a new power station while the Govern is negotiating
the Sectorial Directive for Energy of the Balearics. According to the
GOB, the new power station at Son Reus, which will have 4 50 metre
chimneys, visible from many parts of the Island, would represent an
increase of 26% of the electrical power on Mallorca. According to the
ecological association "it seems to be a flagrant contradiction that
while Mallorca negotiates this project, in the Hague, in the Summit
about Climatic Change, they are discussing measures to be taken to
reduce the emission of contaminants into the atmosphere."
