Last year, the Potholing-diving section of the
Grup
Nord de Mallorca informed that they had explored over 6 km. of galleries
and halls in the sa Gleda cave, in the property of Son Josep in Manacor,
stating that they had evidence of being in the largest flooded cave that
had been covered in Europe.
Now, the potholer-divers, Xisco Gracia, Bernat Clamor and Juanjo Lavergne,
have extended their explorations in the cave to a total of 10,500 metres
of galleries, confirming that we are talking about the largest investigated
underwater cave in Europe and one of the six largest in the world.
In the sa Gleda cave, the water appears in a small lake open to the
exterior via a landfall. The existence of the cave has been known
since 1989. The diver, F. Ripoll, dived into the lake and carried
out the first immersion in the cave passing through a syphon 12 metres
from the entrance that led to a small airchamber 20 metres wide, ending
his investigations at this point. In 1997 the Grup Nord decided to
continue the exploration of the cave.
