On 20 December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly
proclaimed 22 May as the International Day for Biological Diversity. The
Day was previously observed on 29 December, since it was first proclaimed
in 1994.
Biodiversity Day 2001's theme, "Biodiversity and Management of Invasive
Alien Species," provides an opportunity to draw attention to the importance
of protecting the wide variety of life on the planet.
