Ses Fonts Ufanes will be the first declared Natural Monument in Balearic
Islands.
The Fonts Ufanes in Campanet, in the Gabellí property, comprise
the most extraordinary hydrogeological phenomena on Mallorca. This
is a spring that appears intermittently produced by the flooding of the
powerful, unforeseen, spreading water source due to an accumulation of
enough rainfall in the Puig Tomir area. This water supply ends up
in the stream Sant Miquel that crosses the plain of Sa Pobla until it enters
the marsh area of S'Albufera.
The
Dirección
General de Recursos Hídricos of the Balearic Governement has
prepared a draft Decree that declares Ses Fonts Ufanes in Campanet as a
Natural Monument. At present the projected regulation, based on the
Law
4/1989, for the Conservation of Natural Areas and the Wild Flora and Fauna,
is open to the the public prior to final edition and approval.
The
GOB has sent the Dirección
General de Recursos Hídricos a series of suggestions about the projected
Decree with the view to strengthening the protection of the natural area,
such as considering carrying out complementary building works outside
the area of the Natural Monument, to catch and take advantage of the superficial
hydraulic resources of Ses Fonts Ufanes, or not approving any more wells,
nor the increase in existing extraction flow within the protected area.
The ecological organisation has also proposed the creation of a board of
governors as the participating entity in a consulting capacity in the administration
of the protected area, and the creation of a a supervisionary organ for
decision making comprised of representatives of the
Conselleria
de Medio Ambiente of the Balearic Government and the
Ayuntamiento
de Campanet.
