The Balearics and the Pitiüses have six protected natural areas.
Four are the responsibility of the institutions of the autonomous community:
the park of S'Albufera, the park Mondragó and
the park of sa Dragonera on the island of Mallorca; and the park
of S'Albufera des Grau, Illa d'en Colom i Cap de Favàritx
on the island of Menorca. The other two, the park of Cabrera
and natural reserve of ses Salines in Eivissa and Formentera, are
the responsibility of the Spanish state.
At present, the
Environment department
of the Balearic Government, is promoting the creation of three new protected
natural areas. These are the natural reserve of s'Albufereta,
humid area between Alcúdia and Pollença, and the park of
the Serra de Llevant, both on the island of Mallorca; and the park
of Cala d'Hort, Cap Llentrisca and Sa Talaia, in the municipality
of Sant Josep de sa Talaia on Ibiza.
With the future declaration of these three new natural areas, which
will not be carried out until the approval of their respective PORN
(Ruling Plan for Natural Resources), at present in different phases of
approval, it is intended to compensate the deficit that the Balearics suffer
in respect to preservation of the territory.
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Environment is working on the preparation
of an autonomous law to protect Ses Salines on Eivissa and Formentera,
while ecological groups demand more protected natural areas, with the creation
of natural parks of the Serra de Tramuntana and the Es Trenc-Salobrar
on Mallorca; the Vall d'Algaiarens and the barranc d'Algendar
on Menorca, and the costa dels Amunts on Eivissa; as was stipulated
in the
Pacte
de Progrés signed by the political parties that support the
Balearic Government, and as its president, Francesc Antich, said in his
inaugural
speech pronounced in the Balearic Parliament.
