As would seem logical, the town of Sant Joan will celebrate Sant Joan,
although these are not the patron saint festivities, which they hold on
August 29.
The origin of the festivity of June 24 in Sant Joan, called the
"Festa del Sol que Balla" (the festival of the sun that dances), is closely
linked with the festivity of the midsummer solstice, loaded with power
and magic, that is held on the night of Saint John, June 24, although this
does not coincide exactly with the astronomic solstice.
In Sant Joan, this event that gives the name to the celebration, "la
Festa del Sol que Balla", consists in watching the sunrise in the Chapel
of the Consolación. This is followed by games and at 8.30
a.m. the Mass followed by chocolate and ensaimadas.
But the programme of festivities also includes many other activities,
that this year will start on Wednesday 19, and that will last through to
the saint's day. Amongst others, the friendship supper, the presentation
of the book, "Jocs i moixonies" by Antònia Serrano, street parades,
theatre, etc.
The eve of Sant Joan, Sunday 23, there will be a children's fire run
and on Sant Joan, 24, also in the evening, a street parade with figures
of Sant Joan Pelós and the Corb de Sant Joan.
