Toni Catany's Paradise

The Chapel of the Misericòrdia Cultural Centre in Palma is holding until September 1, 2002, the exhibition "Toni Catany. L'artista en el seu paradís", organised by the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and commissioned by Pierre Borhan and David Balsells.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Department of Culture of the Mallorcan Council, is a retrospective dedicated to the photographer Toni Catany (Llucmajor, 1942) that was already presented at the MNAC in Barcelona, in 2000. The 150 photographs by Catany that form the exhibition offer a walk through the most important series of this Mallorcan artists. Since his first calotypes in 1979, until the present transported Polaroids, passing through still life, masculine nudes, views of Mediterranean archaeology and portraits.

The photographs are presented in five exhibitive fields. The Capilla holds a series of still life, calle "Altars Profans". The ground floor has a series dedicated to male nudes called "Mitologia de la bellesa". The first floor holds a small exhibition of the publications carried out by the artist, amongst others the five books of photographs that he has published until now and that have made him one of the most interesting authors of contemporary photography. The second floor holds "Somniar déus" a series dedicated to portraits. Finally the third floor has "La Mediterrània" with photographs of interesting parts of the Mediterranean.

Lunwerg Editores published in 2000, for the retrospective at the MNAC, the book Toni Catany. El artista en su paraíso with the reproduction of all the photographs of the exhibition and texts by Pierre Borhan, Toni Catany and Alain D'Hooghe.

Toni Catany, who has lived and worked in Barcelona since 1963, received in 2001 the Premi Nacional d'Arts Plàstiques de la Generalitat de Catalunya and the Premio Nacional de Fotografía del Ministerio de Educación y Cultura.
