The origins of sailing in the Mediterranean

The origins of sailing in the Mediterranean
The Cultural Centre of the Fundació "la Caixa" on the Balearic Islands, in the old Gran Hotel building in the plaza Weyler in Palma, will host from July 17 to August 25 the exhibition "Ulysses' sea" dedicated to the Mediterranean sailing origins.

In the antiquity sailing in the Mediterranean was a man's battle to defeat the unknown. Ulysses, represents in the Odyssey the symbol of the sailor that fights against the difficulties and finally reaches his destiny. But sailing in the Mediterranean was also scene of commerce, and mercantile interchange brought new cultures.

"Ulysses' sea" will show us the maritime adventure of Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. According to the organisers, the exhibition offers a passionate trip through the times when the Mediterranean sea was the limit of the known universe.

More over, the Cultural Centre of the "la Caixa" Foundation holds until September 1 and  exhibition by the Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm.
