The Fiestas for the King Jaume I will start this weekend in Santa Ponça,
to celebrate the 773 Anniversary of the landing of King Jaime I in the
local bay. The calendar of festivities, which can be found on the web of
the
Calvià Town Council, includes
a wide and varied programme of events that will last until September 10.
Amongst other activities, worth mentioning are: the medieval street
parade with the participation of the giants of Calvià, sa Pobla,
Inca and Manacor, that will take place on Saturday, August 31, as from
5.30 p.m.; and the commemorative acts for the arrival of the Christians,
at the Santa Ponça cross, which will be held on Thursday, September
5, as from 8 p.m..
The Medieval Market –which will include a varied programme of entertainment
activities– will open on Friday 6 and can be visited until Sunday 8 from
noon to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to midnight. The same Friday 6, as from
7 p.m., the handover of standards will take place and the representation
of part of the "Llibre dels Feyts", the traditional dances "Ball dels Cavallers"and
"Ball dels Escamots" and Saracen parade. The activities will end with a
popular supper with music by
Música
Nostra and Al Mayurqa.
The central events on Saturday 7 will be the concentration of Christian
vessels, the landing, the parade of Christians and Saracens, the final
battle and the dance "Ball dels Escamots".
And on Sunday 8, amongst other activities, there will be the Pop 2002
concert organised by 40 Principales including performances by David Bustamante,
Alejandro, Gisela, Natalia, Fórmula Abierta, Patricia Manterola,
Shalim, Coyote Dax, Selena, Miami Sound Machine, Las Ketchup, Los Caños,
Marcos Llunas, Juan Rivas, Carlos Jean, La Musicalité, Tess, La
Fiesta, Coral, Armando...
