The Cultural Centre of the Fundación "la Caixa", in the old
building of the Gran Hotel in the Plaza de Weyler in Palma, will hold between
September 18 and November 10, 2002, the exhibition "Jujol, diseñador"
dedicated to
Josep M.
Jujol (Tarragona, 1879 - Barcelona, 1949), architect, artist, designer
and one of the main collaborators of
Antoni
Gaudí (Reus, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926).
Commissioned by Mariàngels Fondevila and produced by the
Fundación
"la Caixa" and the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (
MNAC),
the exhibition is the first grand anthology dedicated to Jujol as a designer,
and collects together some 100 works, between furniture, metal objects
(lamps, tabernacles and screens), glass partitions, embroidery and drawings.
The exhibition, that has already been on show this summer at the MNAC
in Barcelona as part of the
International
Gaudí Year, is presented in six sections: "Inicios de Jujol.
Colaboraciones con Gaudí", where the artist's first work is shown
and some works carried out with the architect Antoni Gaudí, such
as the work carried out in 1910 on the reformation of the Palma cathedral;
"Un cliente singular de Jujol: Pere Mañach", which shows the groups
that Jujol designed for his friend Pere Mañach; "Mobiliario
y trabajos con madera", with furniture mostly from Jujol's studio in the
Rambla de Catalunya in Barcelona; "Constantes de Jujol: valor
cromático y caligrafía", that shows his domination of colour
and singular calligraphy; "Naturaleza humilde de los materiales: el espíritu
franciscano de Jujol", the area that presents the artist's capacity for
recycling all kinds of objects; and "Trabajos de forja", the section that
has different significant pieces created by the artist in iron.
At the same time as the exhibition, three conferences have been programmed.
The first on September 24 at 7 p.m. by Lluís Gueiburt, sculptor
and director of the
Centro de Estudios
Gaudinistas; the second on October 8 at 7.30 p.m. by the architect
Pedro Pablo Vaquer; and the third on October 22 at 7.30 p.m. with
Josep-Maria Jujol, the artist's son.
Meanwhile, on Saturdays September 28 and October 5 and 19, at 11.30
a.m. there will be commented visits for families, from Tuesdays to Saturdays
at 6 p.m. commented visits for the general public, and from Saturday to
Tuesdays school visits-work shops can be arranged 25 pupils as from 8 years.
