Tuareg, nomads of the desert

Tuareg, nomads of the desert
The Cultural Centre of the Fundació "la Caixa", in the old Gran Hotel building in the Plaça Weyler in Palma, is housing from December 3, 2002 until January 26, 2003, the ethnographic exhibition  "Tuareg.  Nómadas del desierto", a trip round the ancient Tuareg culture via over 250 objects relating to the history, economy, daily life and artisan ware of these Ethnic Nomads. The majority of the pieces in the exhibition, commissioned by François Borel and Albert Costa, come from the  Musée d'ethnographie de Neuchâtel (Switzerland), except some from the Musée National de Mali.

Traditionally dedicated to trans-Sahara commerce and known as the blue men for the colour of their turbans, the Tuareg have suffered the establishment of frontiers between States becoming a sedentary people spread mainly between Algeria, Mali and Nigeria, resulting in progressive decadence.

Within the activities organised together with the exhibition, next Wednesday, December 4 at 7.30 p.m. there will be a conference followed by a debate with Gounar Abdoussamad, Tuareg, and Franóis Borel, commissioner of the exhibition.
