The
SETI@home project,
searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, developed by the
Berkeley
University (California) in collaboration with the
SETI
institute, has many participants on Mallorca. As well as individual
volunteers, a whole group called
SETI@Mallorca
with some 40
members
are analysing with their personal computers chunks of data from the
Arecibo
radio telescope in Puerto Rico and distributed via the Internet. The objective
is to find in those chunks of data signals of intelligent life outside
Earth.
To participate in the project, which has millions of users all over
the world, all you need is a computer with internet connection (not necessarily
permanent) and download and install the client software. The system works
like a screensaver, so it is only executed when the user is not working
with his computer.
There is more information about the project on the web of
SETI@home.
You can also find information on the experiment on the web of

SETI@Mallorca
group.
