The Platform for Democracy and Social Globalisation has called a demonstration
against the war in Iraq that will start on February 15 at 6 p.m. in the
Plaza Espanya in Palma. The movement is part of the Day of Global
Action against the war, day in which demonstrations will take place all
over the world.
At the same time, the president of the Balearic Government, Francesc
Antich, has sent a letter to the president of the Spanish Government, José
María Aznar, where he communicates the agreement adopted by the
Balearic Government on January 24 to manifest against the military intervention
in Iraq and ask the Spanish Government not to use the ports and airports
of the Balearics if finally the war takes place.
Meanwhile, the Executive Board of the Balearic University has issued
a communiqué that has been sent to the President of the Spanish
Government and to the United States Ambassador in Spain, where they pronounce
against the war in Iraq and ask the Spanish Government to defend a peaceful
solution to the conflict in all the international forums.
Update (11/02/2003): On Tuesday the
Parliament
of the Balearics, with the votes in favour of all the parliamentary
groups except the one formed by the Partido Popular that will oppose,
will approve an institutional declaration against the war in Iraq. In contrary,
the
Parliament in Madrid has rejected
a declaration against the war that has had the support of all the opposition
and the vote against by the members of parliament of the Partido Popular.
The discussion of the motion presented in the Balearic Parliament has coincided
with the arrival in the Port of Palma of the destroyer
USS
Oscar Austin. This fact has motivated the letter that the president
of the Balearic Government, Francesc Antich, has sent to the Prime Minister
of the Central Government, José María Aznar, asking for explanations.
