"La Sang", tradition and devotion

Last December the statue of the Holy Blood of Christ in the church of the General Hospital in Palma was attacked and severely damaged. The event caused important popular commotion as the statue is one of the most venerated on Mallorca. At present, the statue is being restored in the workshops of the Bishopric of Mallorca sponsored by the Council of Mallorca, that maintains the sponsorship of "La Sang" as the institution which is the heir to the Grand General Council.

Coinciding with the restoration of the statue, the Department of Culture of the Consell de Mallorca has organised the exhibition "La Sang, tradició i devoció", that will stay open until March 22 in the Chapel of the Misericòrdia in Palma. The exhibition shows carvings of the Holy Blood of Christ proceeding from different towns on Mallorca, paintings and other objects, used in processions, a 'paso' (scene) of the Holy Week Procession and a habit with hood made in sack cloth. The exhibition is complemented by informative panels about the historical origins of the devotion to the Holy Blood of Christ and on the importance of the old guild of the Preciosíssima Sang de Jesucrist and the popular participation of the statue in the Maundy Thursday procession.

The entrance is free and visiting times are from Monday to Friday from 10.15 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and from 4.30 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Commented visits for groups can be arranged on telephone 971718053.
