The Photographs of Cas Oorthuys

The Photographs of Cas Oorthuys
The Cultural Centre of the Fundació "la Caixa", situated in the old building of the Gran Hotel in the Plaza de Weyler in Palma, will house from March 5 till May 18, 2003, the exhibition "A portrait in black and white. The photographs of Cas Oorthuys".  The exhibition produced by the Caixa Foundation and commissioned by Jaume Martorell and Noemi Vallespir, groups some 80 photographs taken in the Balearics during the spring of 1962 by the Dutch photographer, Cas Oorthuys (1908-1975).

The photos in black and white that are presented in this exhibition come from the Netherlands Photo Archives Foundation (NFA) in Rotterdam and are a selection of the 3,000 photographs taken to illustrate a book about the Balearics for the editorial Contact. The majority of these photographs about people, scenes and customs of the Balearic society are unedited, as finally only 84 were used for the publication. The exhibition will travel round different parts of the Balearics for two years.

In the programme of activities connected to the exhibition there will be three conferences. The first, "Cas Oorthuys, photographer of the post-war rebuilding of Europe", by Flip Bool, director of the NFA in Rotterdam, on March 6 at 7.30 p.m. The second, "Walking on the islands with Cas", by Jean Shalekamp, a writer who accompanied the photographer in his trip round the islands, on April 8 at 7.30 p.m. And finally,  "The photography of the 60's", by Maria-Josep Mulet, professor at the UIB, on April 29 at 7.30 p.m.

As for the educational activities programmed round the exhibition, there will be visits for groups of  school children from Tuesday to Friday at times to be determined, commented visits for the general public from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 6 p.m. and family visits on Saturdays March 29, April 12, and May 10 at 11.30 a.m.  To participating in the educational activities, registration can be made on Tel. 971 178 512.

Entrance is free and the visiting times are from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Mondays closed.
