Last Friday the Mallorca Planetarium opened, the first planetarium
on the island, situated in the installations of the Mallorcan Astronomical
Observatory (
OAM) in Costitx. This
new building dedicated to spreading scientific information about astronomy
is inside a 14 metre metallic dome where the planetarium "ZKP3 Skymaster"
by Zeiss has been installed, with a capacity to project the stars that
can be observed from any point on Earth. The new planetarium can
hold up to 100 people and can project in real time, via software developed
by the OAM, astronomical images proceeding from the Majorcan Astronomical
Observatory itself or from other telescopes. It also has an exhibition
hall, which has opened with an exhibition of meteorites from all over the
world. The initiative is supported by the
Consell
de Mallorca,
Sa Nostra and the
Ajuntament
de Costitx.
