According to the organisers of the competition, Palma is one of the
five finalist cities that are opting to be the venue for the next
America's
Cup. Valencia, Lisbon, Marseilles and Naples are the cities selected,
together with Palma, as finalist candidates to hold the competition. Barcelona
and the rest of candidates have been dropped from the list of possible
host venues for the 2007 event.
The America's Cup is one of the most important international sports
events, together with the Olympics and the World Cup for football. Palma's
candidature to be the venue for the next America's Cup, promoted by the
Real
Club Náutico de Palma,
was
presented in March with the support from the Balearic public institutions.
More over, on June 5, after the results of the recent
elections,
the future president of the Balearic Government, Jaume Matas, and the future
Mayor of Palma, Catalina Cirer, accompanied by the president of the Real
Club Náutico de Palma, Gabriel Barceló, and the director
of the candidature, Jaime Enseñat, travelled to Geneva to reiterate
to the organisers their support to Palma's candidature.
