The Balearic local ministers for Tourism, Celestí Alomar, and Inland Revenue, Joan Mesquida, have presented today the
Projected Law for the creation of the
Impuesto Ecoturístico. The objective of the law is to improve the tourist activity and to preserve
the surroundings and environment of the Balearics.
According to the Draft Law, the tourist stays, both by residents and those from outside the islands, will be a cause of payment of the
tax, counted in overnights, in the establishments of tourist firms situated in the Balearics, with the exception of children up to the
age of 12.
The tax contemplates a maximum tariff of 2 euros per person and day in the 5 star hotels and apartments, 1 euro in 3 and 4 stars,
and a minimum tariff of 0,25 euros for agrotourism. The tax will be paid by the guests accommodated but the owners of the
establishments will have to collect and pay the government the corresponding amounts.
The funds collected will be destined to the reformation and rehabilitation of tourist areas, the recovery of rural and natural resources
and areas, and the administration and revaluation of the heritage of social, cultural and tourist importance.
The Balearic Government foresees applying the law as from the year 2001, although the exact date of the start will depend on the
rhythm with which the steps and approval of the law are taken.
