The town of Selva, is holding the I Fira de ses Herbes on June 10, 17 and 18. The celebration organised by the promoters of the
Medicinal Garden "Ramon Llull" of Selva, is sponsored by the
Govern de les Illes Balears, the
Consell de Mallorca and the
Ajuntament de Selva, and has collaborations from numerous local entities.
The most original part of the fair will be the public distillation (for the first time on Mallorca) of myrtle water, in the middle of the town
square; the myrtle will have been collected from the woods of the Caimari Commune, and will be taken to Selva in a decorated cart,
accompanied by the 'xeremiers' musicians and 'cavallers' dancers. Afterwards an ancient still will be lit and Alexandre Ballester will
make the official town cry.
Myrtle water from Mallorca used to be well known as a cosmetic centuries ago all over Europe.
A limited number of bottles of artisan production of Myrtle water, herb liqueur and Sant Joan oil will be sold. .
The stands will be based on herbs and their production. There will also be music (group
Herbes Dolces, Coral de Selva), audiovisual
(Fundació ACA), stories (les rondalles de ses herbes), conferences (Jardí Botànic de Soller), exhibitions (endemic plants), food
(coca de verdura). All in all, a fair with fiesta, culture and sale of products of the land.
