From September 15 till October 1 the
Olympic Games will be held in
Sydney, Australia. The participation by the Balearic islands in the
olympics has never been so numerous as this edition, in which six
Mallorcan sportspeople will be competing for a medal.
These olympic sportspeople are: Pepote Ballester from Pollença who will
participate in Sailing and already obtained a gold medal in the Atlanta
olympics in 1996; Joan Llaneras from Porreres, Toni Tauler from Santa
Margalida, Miquel Alzamora from Artà and, the four times world champion
for mountain bike, Marga Fullana from Sant Llorenç who will compete in
Cycling; and Ernesto Rodríguez from Palma who forms part of the Spanish
Volleyball team.
Apart from the regattist, Pepote Ballester, the only sportspeople from
the islands who have won a gold medal in any Olympics are the
footballers Paco Soler and Gabi Vidal at the Barcelona 92.
