In June 1997, Manolo Blasco discovered from the Mallorcan Astronomic Observatory (OAM), in Costitx, an asteroid of the 14.6 magnitude, that was given the provisional designation 1997LL6. The International Astronomy Union (IAU) confirmed the discovery on January 7, 1999 giving the asteroid 1997 LL6 the definitive number: 9900.
On September 12, on the Diada de Mallorca, the presentation of the asteroid took place with the final designation of "9900 Ramon Llull", in memory of this important Mallorcan character. The president of the Mallorcan Council, Maria Antonia Munar, presided the event accompanied by the director of the Observatory, Salvador Sánchez, and the discoverer of the asteroid, Manolo Blasco.
