The exhibition "The Posidonia, marine woods of Poseidon" was presented on Tuesday, October 17, at the "
Sa Nostra" cultural
centre. This is an exhibit that synthesizes the importance of the posidonia fields in the marine ecosystem, the impacts that
threaten it and the perspectives for its conservation.
The exhibition, that can be visited until November 4, 2000, has been carried out by the environment consultants Pandion SL,
commissioned by the
General Direction for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Balearic Government, with the collaboration of
Obra Social de Sa Nostra.
According to the organisers, "the ocean investigation has demonstrated in the latest years, that the posidonia has an enormous
importance for the health of the marine environment, but that this ecosystem is threatened by the intensive use of the coast. The
waste that contaminates the water, the building of quays, and ports that change the maritime currents and alter the dynamics of
the coast, the massive extraction of sand from the seabed, the repeated anchoring of numerous boats over the same area, the
dredge fishing, the introduction of exotic species such as the Caulerpa taxifolia... are some of the causes of destruction of the posidonia.
