RIU Hotels has acquired land on the island of Sal, in the African
archipelago of Cape Verde in the Atlantic, and where the group is planning to build a first establishment.
Situated off the west coast of Africa, some 450 kms from Senegal, the Cape Verde archipelago is just two hours by plane from
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, four hours from Madrid and between five and six hours from the other principal European
capitals. The archipelago is made up of 10 islands and 8 islets, all of them of volcanic origin. Its population is known for its
hospitality, local music, use of the Portuguese language and its celebration of Carnival, leading to the special attraction of the
country, and to its becoming known as the "African Caribbean".
RIU intends to build its first establishment on the island of Sal, which is some 216 square kilometres in area. The island has an
international airport, the main port of entry for the archipelago.
This will add an eleventh country destination to the ten in which it operates today, with a total of 89 establishments and 10,500
employees. In 2001, RIU is planning to open first establishments in two new destinations, Jamaica and the Portuguese island of
Madeira.
