Since 1979 the
GOB have been giving the prizes "Ciment" and "Alzina", to point out the people, institutions and entities who
have excelled in their destructive task in the environment or for their work in favour or defence.
During the annual dinner, held on December 17, the GOB gave the "Alzina" (Spanish Oak) prize for last year to
Lorenzo Milà
(news caster of TV2 at 10 p.m.), Carles Amengual (
Jardí Medicinal Ramon LLul) and Fora Son (anti-autopista de Llevant).
They also elected the prizes "Ciment" and "Alzina" for this year.
The prizes "Ciment 2000" has been awarded to Jaume Matas, minister of Environment (132 votes), Federación Agrícola y
Ganadera de las Balears - FAGB (127 votes) and to Emaya, Palma municipal water and drains firm (73 votes). Amongst the
preselected for the "Ciment" prize, there were two more candidates, the Mayor of Andratx and the Balearic Government's
Council for Energy and Technology Innovation.
The prizes "Alzina 2000" have been awarded to S'Altra Senalla - Botigues solidàries (127 votes), to the Councils of Artà, Son
Servera and Capdepera (118 votes) and of Puigpunyent (99 votes). Amongst the preselection there were two more
candidates, the sketchers of comics and strips of the Mallorcan newspapers, and as a novelty, for the first time an Internet
media was included, the MallorcaWeb electronic publication, that received 48 votes, representing 20% of the voters.
