The programme for the fiestas of "Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià
2001" in Pollença started today, Friday, with the opening of the photographic exhibition "Festes de Sant
Antoni 2000", that can be visited until January 20 at the Club Pollença. On Sunday, January
14 at 6 p.m. there will be an exhibition of "Ball de Pagès" at the Convent de
Sant Domingo, by the Escola de Ball of Pollença.
The most popular events will be held next
week: Tuesday 16 the popular dance known as "la Revetla"; Wednesday 17, Sant
Antoni and on Saturday 20, Sant Sebastià.
The events programmed for Tuesday 16 start at 6 p.m. with the "Bonfire Contest" and the
performance by the "Xeremiers" (bagpipes, drum and pipe), followed by the celebration
of the street parade with the "Pollença Cornet and Drum Band". At 8 p.m. the bonfires will be
lit and the prizes will be given.
On Wednesday 17, at 10 a.m. there will be the "Traditional Float Parade" and "Beneïdes -
Animal blessing". There will be a present for all the participants and those who
participate with decorated floats will receive a live turkey. At 11.30 a.m., from Almoina,
the traditional climb to fetch the "Pi" (pine tree) de Ternelles, accompanied by
the Xeremiers. In the Ternelles property there will be traditional lunch of "pa amb oli,
arrengades i vi" (bread, oil, herrings and wine) and at 2 p.m. after the meal the
neighbours will carry the popular "pi" to the square Plaça Vella. There it will be stood up
and all the young men of the town will try to climb the 20 metres of the usual
height of the pole. On the same Wednesday at 8 p.m. there will be holy mass and offering to
Sant Antoni.
On Saint Sebastian's day there will be more festivities. At 2 p.m. the bells will ring and
at 7 p.m. there will be a procession with the statue of Saint Sebastian and the
traditional "Cavellets" and the "Standard", followed by the mass with the Ball de l'Oferta".
Finally the bonfires will be lit in the Plaça Major and there will be the "Ball
de les Taules" by the "Cavallets".
