For the first time since 1993, the Index for the Cost of Living for the Balearics is situated
in 3.8%, lower than the average for Spain, after the unexpected contention (0
increase) for December. The index for 2000 in the state is at 4%, double the foreseen by the
Chancellor of the central government, after learning that for December the index
rose for the state by 0.3% with respect to November .
According to the
general director for inland revenue for the Balearic Government, Antoni
Monserrat, "this relative descent in the index for the Islands was favoured by the
descenct by 6 tenths in the Group 3 - homes (community charges, heating, lighting and
water) which can be interpreted as an effect produced by the good behaviour of the
price of fuel and mild temperatures in December, which because the consumption has been
contained, the traditional application of progressive tariffs has been lessened."
