Open pro-software campaign for the Administration

Open pro-software campaign for the Administration
In 1999, the organisation Fronteras Electrónicas (FrEE), which includes the digital publication Kriptópolis, launched a campaign in favour of the installation of free software in public administrations.  The reasons given were:  better adaptability, economy, universal access, trustworthiness and a greater security of free software (open code) with respect to owned software (closed code).  According to Kriptópolis , it is also necessary to add to the previous arguments, the need to guarantee that the public's personal data and the official secrets in the hands of the Administration should be property protected.

Therefore, Kriptópolis have started a campaign to demand the Government, and all Public Administrations, to adopt a plan of Security Measures aimed at guaranteeing the privacy of sensitive information stored in official computers.

In the same line to promote free software, the association Softcatalà and the multinational Sun Microsystems have signed an agreement to translate into Catalan the Open Office 6.0, the version of open code of the well known office package  Star Office.

The first version of the programme will be available at the end of the year and will have editions for Windows, Solaris and Linux.  They are also studying the possibility of carrying out a version for the Mackintosh operative systems.
