A group of five Mallorcans participated in the
World
Social Forum that was held last January in Porto Alegre (Brazil), as
an alternative to the
World Economic
Forum of Davos (Switzerland), arranged by the FMI and the World Bank.
Now, following the recommendations of the international meeting at Porto
Alegre, ESPAI OBERT has been created to present and meditate in the
Balearics about the proposals carried out. As a first activity, a
conference has been arranged for March 6 at 8 p.m. in the Assembly Room
of the Banca March, calle Nuredduna in Palma, to present the proposals
adopted at the World Social Forum and to unite different island sensibilities
near to these proposals.
The World Economical Forum at Davos has become over the years
the most important global business congress in the world, and the World
Social Forum aims to become the alternative event that will gather together
progressive groups of the planet who believe that social progress must
not be separate from economic progress.
The participants in the first world meeting decided that the year 2002
the World Social Forum should be held in Porto Alegre again, coinciding
with the World Economic Forum of Davos, that reunites annually the principal
business people and financial leaders of the whole world.
