On April 1st 2001, at the stroke
of midnight, the first same-sex couples were joined in marriage in the
Amsterdam City Hall, it market the
end of an almost 15-year process. The road to equal rights in personal
relationships encompassed court trials, symbolic wedding registers, registered
partnership and, finally, opening civil marriage to all gay and lesbian
couples. At times, it looked like a long struggle, but in politics, things
happen at their own pace. And no matter what, the Netherlands has made
world history.
