The lack of protection of the Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra de Tramuntana has an area of 80.000 hectares and is the most important natural area of the Balearics and Pitiüses.

From the Formentor peninsula in Pollença to the Dragonera island, in the municipality of Andratx, the natural area extends from NE to SW like a 90 kilometre wall 20 kilometres wide along the northwest coast of Mallorca.

The area of the Serra de Tramuntana includes totally or partially the territory of twenty municipalities of the island of Mallorca: Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Calvià, Puigpunyent, Esporles, Valldemossa, Palma, Bunyola, Deià, Sóller, Alaró, Fornalutx, Santa Maria, Lloseta, Mancor, Selva, Escorca, Campanet and Pollença.

The protection of Serra de Tramuntana continues to be pending, although its was stipulated that it would be declared a Natural Parc in the Pacte de Progrés signed by the political parties that support the present Govern de les Illes Balears, a political commitment that was reafirmed by the president, Francesc Antich, in his inaugural speech pronounced in the Balearic Parliament.
