Es Migjorn Gran will have a new Town Hall
The president of the Balearic Government, Francesc Antich, the president of the Menorcan Council, Joana Barceló, and the mayor of Es Migjorn Gran, Pere Riduavets, signed yesterday an agreement for the construction of a new Town Hall in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran. According to the agreement, the project, valued at over 200 million pesetas, will be financed together by the Balearic Government and the Menorcan Council that will pay approximately 50% of the budget and by the Town Council that will pay the rest. The news of the construction of a new municipal building has been well accepted by all the public since the present building does not have the necessary conditions for a Town Hall.

In the same ceremony, held in the Town Hall, the Balearic Councillor for Health, Aina Salom, and the mayor of Es Migjorn Gran, Pere Riduavets Fays, signed the initial health protocol for the construction of a new medical centre in the town, a project that will cost 60 million pesetas.

The event was part of the official visit paid to the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran by the Balearic President, Francesc Antich, accompanied by the Menorcan Council President, Joana Barceló.  The other official who participated in the events, besides the Balearic Councillor for Health, were the Balearic Councillor for the Presidency, Antoni Garcias, the Balearic Councillor for Public Works, Josep Antoni Ferrer, the vicepresident of the Menorcan Council, Carme Garcia Querol, and the Menorcan Councillor for Health and Welfare, Miquel Gascón.

Amongst other activities, the group visited some centres of the town, met up with public entities and visited the two centenary Riudavets brothers, Joan 111 and Perico 100, who both received a walking stick and a watch.

Es Migjorn has 1.135 inhabitants (01/01/98) and became an independent municipality in 1989, previously belonging to Es Mercadal. However, the centre to be found around the Sant Cristòfol church dates from the second half of the XVIII century, during the era of the second British domination of the island of Menorca. The municipality offers different attractions, amongst which are the town with its peaceful surroundings, the beaches of Biniagus, Sant Adeodat and Sant Tomàs, different ravines, the Cova dels Coloms, known as "sa Catedral" and archaeological remains at Sant Augustí Vell and Sant Tomàs.
