Around 800 million men, women and children
are chronically hungry. Hunger causes illness and death, robs people of
their potential to work and cripples children's learning capacity.
"Fight hunger to reduce poverty" is the theme for this year's
World
Food Day -- a day observed throughout the world on the anniversary
of
FAO's founding, 16 October 1945.
World Food Day will provide an additional opportunity to raise awareness
about the issues to be addressed at the
World
Food Summit: five years later, which will take place from November
5 to 9, 2001, in Rimini (Italy).
