Once again the island of Mallorca is preparing to celebrate the anual
Carnival festivities. "Dijous Llarder" – which this year is on February
7 - maks the start of the celebrations and festive events that will last
until Ash Wednesday, last day of Carnival and first day of Lent, as per
tradition. In some towns, such as Capdellà (Calvià), the
celebrations have already started this weekend.
In Algaida, this year they will once again live to the full the festivity
of En Camestortes, recovered successfully in 2000. En Camestortes is a
very complete festivity that gathers together all the elements of carnival:
joy, mockery, fancy dress, criticism, inversion, hubbub. It is a festivity
in which the death of winter is represented symbolically: the character
of En Camestortes is the old year that has to be killed to let in the arrival
of spring.
