"Glosadors" from Mallorca and Menorca, "cantadors" form Eivissa
and "balladors" from Formentera will perform at the Palma Conservatory.
The Balearic singers of "gloses" (ballads) represent a Medieval inheritance
that has survived over the years. The "gloses" are the most important live
expression of the traditional oral poetry, based on improvisation. Many
singers do not know how to read and write but can dominate popular language better than anyone and have extraordinary mental abilities, being able
to answer with rhythm, rhyme and irony any invitation.
With the aim of promoting this rich oral manifestation of the popular
culture, the General Direction of Linguistic Policy has organised a performance
called "Combat de glosadors", that will be held next Saturday, June 1,
at 8.30 p.m., at the auditorium of the Conservatori de Música i
Dansa de les Illes Balears. The show will have the participation of well
known poetry singers from Mallorca, Menorca and Eivissa and the group Aires
Formenterencs.
Entrance is free. (Ticket reservation required by telephone 971 71 87
