Palma is holding from
May
20 the programme of cultural visits and concerts organised by the
Joventuts
Musicals de Palma, for the celebration of the Corpus Christi Fetivity.
The
programme will
end next Sunday, May 2, with the Mass, the traditional procession and a
concert by the
Orquestra
Simfònica de Balears.
The religious events will begin at 5.15 p.m. at the Palma Cathedral.
After the Mass, that will be presided by the
Bishop
of Mallorca, there will be the procession, leaving the Palau Reial,
and passing by Victòria, Conquistador, Tous i Maroto, Rosari, Sant
Domingo and Cort, to end again at the Palau Reial. Finally, at 9 p.m.,
the Orquestra Simfònica de Balears, conducted by Geoffrey Simon,
will offer a concert at the Palau de l'Almudaina.
The festivity of Corpus Christi is celebrated in nearly every town and
village of Mallorca, with processions and other activities. This celebration
is particularly colourful in Pollença, with the dances of "Les Àguiles"
and "Sant Joan Pelós". The dance of "Les Àguiles" is held
by two young girls dressed in white and with many gold jewels from head
to foot, supplied by the families from the town for this occasion. Sant
Joan Pelós, dressed in silk with a lamb in his arms, accompanies
"Les Àguiles" and the procession.
