Coinciding with the arrival of the heat, the summer fiestas get going
all over the Balearics, being "Sant Joan Baptista" the first celebration
of the calendar, on June 24.
The most well-known and spectacular "Festes de Sant Joan" are the ones
in
Ciutadella
on the island of Menorca, although it is also celebrated intensely on Mallorca
(Calvià, Deià, Felanitx, Mancor de la Vall, Muro, Sant Joan,
Palma, Son Servera...), on Eivissa (
Sant
Joan de Labritja,
Jesús,
Nit
de Sant Joan de l'IEE...) and on Formentera (
La
Mola), particularly the "Nit de Sant Joan", on June 23.
The programme for
Sant
Joan in Calvià, that will begin on Friday 21st, features music,
theatre and a party at the beach of Es Carregador in Palmanova.
In
Felanitx the Saint's day includes a very special activity, the "Ball
de Sant Joan Pelós"; exceptional because of its traditional style,
the same as the "Festa del Sol que balla" which is held in the village
of
Sant
Joan.
In
Deià,
Mancor
de la Vall, Muro and
Son
Servera, Sant Joan Baptista is the Patron Saint and their fiestas usually
last over a week, with very long and varied programmes of activities.
Palma celebrates only the traditional "Nit de Sant Joan" at the Parc
de la Mar, and this year there will be a spectacular fire night by
Iguana
Teatre and some other outstanding performances.
