On July 24, the Human Development
Report 2002 of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was
presented. The report, called "Deepening Democracy in a Fragmented World",
is first and foremost about the idea that politics is as important to successful
development as economics. According to the report, at current trends a
significant portion of the world's states are unlikely to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals, including the overarching target of halving extreme
poverty by 2015.
