The Chapel of the Cultural Centre La Misericòrdia in Palma is
holding until September 23 the exhibition "Entre poc i massa sa mesura
passa" dedicated to the weights and measures of Mallorca before the Decimal
Metric System.
Organised by the Cultural Centre of Campos and sponsored by the
Consell
de Mallorca, the exhibition gathers together different objects and
instruments used to weigh or measure materials, products and land with
explanations about the different denominations that the units of measure
and their group had for each thing, such as the "unça" (ounce),
"lliura" (pound) y "quarterada" (area measurement), and their equivalents
in the Decimal Metric System.
According to the panels that illustrate the exhibition, the Catalan
conquest in 1229 was the origin of the Mallorcan metric system, although
some measures were kept from the Arab era. As from the second half of the
XIX century, the Mallorcan system of measures declines with the Decimal
Metric System.
Commissioned by Miquel Ballester, the exhibition that can be seen at
the Misericòrdia was already presented in August in Campos as part
of the Patron Festivities for the Virgin of August.
Meanwhile, the transparent building of the Cultural Centre of the Misericòrdia
in Palma is holding at present an exhibition of works presented in the
third photographic competition "L'home i el medi ambient de Mallorca",
organised by the Department of Environment and Nature of the Mallorcan
Council.
