The
Mallorcan Council
is organising the VI Mallorcan Day to commemorate the 726th anniversary of
the swearing by King Jaume II of the "Franqueses i privilegis del regne
de Mallorca" (freedoms and privileges of the kingdom of Mallorca) .
The programme started on August 30, at the Cala Gamba nautical club,
with the beginning of the sailing competition "VI Trofeu Diada de Mallorca
de Vela Llatina", and will last until September 29, with many events
that will take place in 34 towns on the Island: Palma, Porreres, Búger,
Santa Eugènia, Santuari de Lluc (Escorca), Artà, Santuari
de Cura (Algaida), Sóller, Inca, Selva, Manacor, Sa Pobla, Costitx,
Santa Margalida, Ariany, Colònia de Sant Jordi (Ses Salines), Ses
Salines, Alcúdia, Llubí, Felanitx, Campos, Pollença,
Maria de la Salut, Capdepera, Vilafranca de Bonany, Calvià, Esporles,
Montuïri, Muro, Petra, Sant Llorenç, Pont d'Inca (Marratxí),
Son Servera and Lloseta.
The main novelty of the Mallorcan Day programme, known as the "Diada
2002", is the presentation of the new giants of the Insular Council: King
Sanç and King Jaume III of Mallorca, that will join the giants of
King Jaume II of Mallorca and Queen Esclarmunda de Foix that were presented
last
year, together with the "Joc de Ministrils".
During the institutional ceremony of the "Diada", which will be held
at La Misericòria in Palma, the giving of medals "Honor i Gratitud
de l'Illa de Mallorca" will take place. The president of the Mallorcan
Council, Maria Antònia Munar, will give the distinctions to Josep
Amengual Domingo, Anthony Bonner, Antònia Buades Vallespir and Joan
Veny i Clar.
