On Wednesday, April 23, is Saint George's day, when it is a tradition
in Mallorca and in the rest of Catalan-speaking areas to exchange presents
books and roses with loved ones. It is the real lovers' day in the
Catalan culture.
Sant Jordi's day coincides with the celebration of the
World
Book & Copyright Day, and in Palma, throughout the day from 9 a.m.
until 9 p.m. the bookshops of the centre of the city will set up tables
with books in the streets, to present particularly the editorial novelties
of the year. The circuit of stands, coordinated by the
Gremi
de Llibreters de Mallorca, is Plaza Cort, Carrer Colom, Plaça
Major, Carrer Sant Miquel, and Carrer dels Oms.
Like last year, 10 knights of Sant Jordi and a group of xeremiers will
participate in the festive day, riding black Mallorcan horses, along
the circuit of stands from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and giving roses to the
pedestrians.
The collective reading dedicated to Camilo José Cela that was
held at the Palma Town Council last year will be repeated, but this time
it will be dedicated to
Francesc
de Borja Moll and the traditional
Rondalles.
Wednesday will also see the opening of the new Teatre Municipal Xesc
Forteza with several performances that can be found
in
this web by the
Palma Town Council.
