The Fiestas for the King Jaume I have started this weekend in
Santa Ponça, to celebrate the 774 Anniversary of the landing of
King Jaime I in the local bay. The calendar of festivities, which can be
found on the web of the
Calvià Town
Council and in this
PDF document, includes a wide and varied programme
of events that will last until September 7.
Amongst other activities, worth mentioning are the giants street parade
that will take place on Saturday, August 30, and the commemorative acts
for the arrival of the Christians, at the Santa Ponça cross, which
will be held on Thursday, September 4, as from 8 p.m.
The Medieval Market –which will include a varied programme of entertainment
activities– will open on Friday 5 and can be visited until Sunday 7 from
noon to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to midnight. The same Friday 5, as from
7 p.m., the handover of standards will take place and the representation
of part of the "Llibre dels Feyts", the traditional dances "Ball dels Cavallers"
and "Ball dels Escamots" and Saracen parade. The activities will end with
a popular supper with music by
Música
Nostra and
Al Mayurqa.
The central events on Saturday 6 will be the concentration of Christian
vessels, the landing, the parade of Christians and Saracens, the final
battle and the dance "Ball dels Escamots".
And on Sunday 7, amongst other activities, there will be a popular paella
for everybody, a mass in the church and the concert "Rei en Jaume" by
the Banda Municipal de Calvià.
