The Balearic Councillor for
Public
Works, Homes and Transport of the Balearic Government, Mabel Cabrer,
and the executive councillor for
Public
Works of the Mallorcan Council, Antoni Pascual, signed last week the
protocol that establishes the general framework of action to be taken by
both entities to do with roads and lanes on Mallorca. This financial agreement
will mean modifying the Road Plan for Mallorca, a proposal that will be
presented next October 6 for its approval in the Full Council Meeting for
Mallorca. Carrying out the new Road Plan will represent the construction
of the motorway Inca-Manacor, that will pass via Sieneu and Petra, the
third lane of the Motorway Palma-Inca, the improvement to the road Sa Pobla-Alcudia,
the second ring road for Palma, the interring of part of the Paseo Marítimo
in Palma, and the extension to the Poniente motorway as far as Peguera
and that of Levante as far as Campos, amongst others.
According to the
GOB, in this
press
release, the new motorway projects will cause fierce aggression to
the Mallorcan countryside as they will eat up 20 million m2 of territory.
Also, the ecologists think that carrying out these public works will imply
the expropriation of some 4,000 private property, will favour private transport,
will promote the consumption of combustible fossils, will diminish the
permeability of the land and will cause a great scenic and social impact.
The GOB think that the proposal of 524 million euros for the project is
too high and that Mallorca has other priorities in education, health, residues,
water supply and public transport. Finally, the ecologists demand
an Integral Plan for Transport, as a prior step to develop any plan of
road infrastructure.
