The
GOB has started a campaign
on Internet "
Salvem Sa Canova"
with a view to avoiding the urbanisation of Sa Canova in Campos, a property
situated next to the natural area of
Es
Trenc y Es Salobrar de Campos. At present in the
Balearic
Parliament the projected Law of Urgent Measure for urban planning is
being dealt with, which contemplates the autorisation of building a housing
estate on this land to be able to carry out the construction of a tourist
residential complex, and also a Polo course and commercial centre.
According to the GOB, the approval of this law and the fulfilment of
this project would mean the destruction of a magnificent natural area,
at present covered by a dense thicket of wild olive trees, and the degradation
of the beach and dunes of Es Trenc and the wetlands of Es Salobrar in Campos.
To avoid this new urbanisation, the GOB has created a web "
Salvem
Sa Canova" with information and photographs on the natural values of
the area and the impact on the surroundings that would result from the
project. The new page has been published in Catalan, Spanish, English and
German with a view to promoting the campaign on an international level.
The mayor of
Campos, Andreu Prohens,
supports the new urban initiative and considers that the municipality of
Campos, traditionally dedicated to farming, cannot be shunned from tourist
activity.
UPDATE (8/11/2003):
Joan Flaquer, Conseller for Tourism and spokesman of the Govern, announced
on Friday that the Government will not continue with this urban initiative
due to some irregularities in the project.
