The city of Palma offers over Christmas a wide choice of activities,
markets, nativity scenes, concerts, street entertainment....
The traditional Christmas markets will be installed once again
in the Plaza de Espanya and in the Plaza Major until Three Kings Day.
There will also be a solidarity market for Es Refugi from December 11 to
13 in the
Casal
Balaguer.
As for the Nativity Scenes, visits can be made to the Articulated
Scene installed permanently in the
Poble
Espanyol; The Napolitan Scene of the XVIII century that is also permanently
on show in the
Palau
March, the Scene in the Sant Antoniet Cloister in Calle San Miguel
that opens on December 10; the traditional scene of the old artisans in
the entrance of the
Town Hall of Palma;
a Contemporary Scene by Ramon Company, that is exhibited in
Can
Marquès until January 5; the many scenes in the Caputxines Convent
that can be visited from December 16 to January 11. Other scenes
that can also be visited in the Sang Church, the Scene of the XVIII century
in the Sacred Heart of the Sant Francesc Basilica, the one of the XIX century
in the Santa Catalina Tomas chapel in the Santa Magdalena convent, the
one of the Santa Clara Convent, the Associació de Betlemistes de
Palma in the Santa Catalina Market, and the paper one in the
Mallorca
Museum. And a finally the artisan scene by the Associació de
Betlemistes Francesc Rosselló that will be open in the
Centre
Cultural la Misericòrdia from December 10 till January 11.
Meanwhile, in different parts of the city, there will be different Live
Nativity Scenes and different entertainment, such as street
parades by the Wonderbrass group or a gathering of Folk Dance schools,
on Saturday December 20. Particularly important is the dance and
New
Year's Eve celebration at midnight in the Plaça de Cort and
the Three Kings Parade on January 5.
As for concerts, there is a wide choice. On Saturday December
20 at 9 p.m. as part of the Season for the
Orquestra
Simfònica de Balears "Ciutat de Palma", the
Coral
Universitat de les Illes Balears, the filial choirs and solo artists,
directed by Joan Company, will offer the tradition Christmas Concert in
the
Auditòrium de Palma.
On Sunday, December 21, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Conservatori
Superior de Música de Balears, will be the Christmas concert by
the Choirs of the
Fundació
Teatre Principal de Palma. The same Sunday 21, at 9.30 p.m. in the
Basilica de Sant Frances the Christmas Concert of the
Fundació
"la Caixa" will be given by the group
Gabrieli
Consort & Players with works by
Marc-Antoine
Charpentier. And on Monday, December 22, at 8 p.m. the Camerata "Sa
Nostra" will give the Christmas Concert in the Auditorium of the
Centro
de Cultura "Sa Nostra" in Palma.
And finally, the
Palma Town Council
has organised as usual a series of Christmas concerts by the Palma Municipal
Band of Music, the Musical Group of Camp Redó and the S'Almudaina
Band of Music, that will take place in the Plaça d'Espanya between
December 17 and 21; also the carol concerts organised by the Federació
de Corals de Mallorca and the
Joventuts
Musicals de Palma that will be held in the street on December 22, in
different parts of the city, ending with a special concert at 9 p.m. in
the Santa Eulalia church. Also worth mentioning is the Gospel Music
concerts by the group The Sisters on December 27 at 7 p.m. in the Town
Hall Entrance, on 28th at 8 p.m. at the Centre Cultural de s'Escorxador,
and on 29th at the same time in the Sant Antoniet church.
