Caimari, a small village of the municipality of Selva, situated in
the North part of Mallorcca, on the East side of the Serra de Tramuntana,
has been the site for just over a year of a singular open air museum that
shows in an educational way a group of traditional constructions of rural
life. The space, known as the "Parc Etnològic de Caimari",
was opened on November 16, 2002, coinciding with the celebration of the
fifth edition of the Fira de s'Oliva (olive oil fair).
In an area of 3000 square metres, near the entrance to the village,
next to the public swimming pool, at present there is an exhibition of
a charcoal burner's hut, an oven, a charcoal burning site known as a "sitja",
a lime kiln, a blackberry hedge enclosure, a 'coll de tords' (special bird
trap), a stone trap, and as a novelty, a snow house that was opened coinciding
with the last edition of the Oil Fair, on November 15, 2003. As part
of the fair, the book "Parc Etnològic de Caimari. Guia de
visita" by Antoni Ordinas Garau, was presented and it offers full information
about the museum and about the 'tafones' (oil presses) of
Oli
Caimari, the vantage point of the old road to Lluc, and about other
places of interest in the village.
