The Canonge de Santa Cirga cultural association has a new web.
A new web about the traditional Mallorcan singers of "gloses" (improvised ballads) has just been launched. It is the web of the Associació Cultural Canonge de Santa Cirga, a project coordinated by Felip Munar, professor of popular culture at the Balearic University, director of the Catalan teaching service of the Balearic Government and member of the Associació Cultural Canonge de Santa Cirga.
The Associació Cultural Canonge de Santa Cirga organises every year the "Mostres Internacionals d'Improvisadors-glosadors", as well as the performances of "combats de glosadors" that take place all over the island.
The Mallorcan singers of "gloses" (improvised ballads) represent a Medieval inheritance that has survived over the years. The "gloses" are the most important live expression of the traditional oral poetry, based on improvisation. Many singers do not know how to read and write but can dominate popular language better than anyone and have extraordinary mental abilities, being able to answer with rhythm, rhyme and irony any invitation.
