In 1997, Ramon Sellas Rosell and Elena Vera Kay officially established MallorcaWeb SL, in the Mallorcan municipality of Andratx, with the aim of providing all types of services related to computing and telecommunications, as well as publishing on any magnetic medium. This is how we explained it at the time: We were born with the aim of promoting the use of the Internet, developing the first Internet Community in Mallorca, creating the first Multilingual Directory and Search Engine in Mallorca and offering Hosting and Design services at an international level.
At that time, there were no mobile phones or Google. Few people had computers and the prices of Internet connections were exorbitant. There was no media outlet in the Balearic Islands with a digital presence and practically no company had its own website.
We were pioneers 🙂
In 1998 we celebrated the first anniversary of MallorcaWeb, publishing this editorial article:
The year 1998 has represented in all the world the consolidation of Internet as a tool for universal communication. Internet has broken frontiers, contributing to knowledge and tolerance, allowing individuals and groups to express freely and directly their own personality.
For Mallorca and the Balearic Islands, 1998 has represented the incorporation on the Internet of the digital editions of the written Press. First it was El DÃa del Mundo, followed by Diari de Balears, Diario de Ibiza and finally Ultima Hora. It is expected that at the beginning of 99 the digital edition of Diario de Mallorca will appear completing the Balearic informative offering. If we take in account the important efforts in modernisation and internet presence of the Govern Balear, Consell de Mallorca, Ayuntamiento de Palma, UIB, and the Internet providers and servers and almost all the branches of our economy, we can affirm that 1998 has represented the normalisation of Internet in Mallorca.
One of the big challenges that is still outstanding is to popularise the Internet and the new technologies to enlarge its social standing. We must make every effort in working together to ensure that nobody misses the big opportunities of personal and collective development that the new technologies offer.
There are many other challenges that remain on hold but the future is hopeful and with the support of all we can make the year 1999 represent the definitive consolidation of Internet in Mallorca as a useful tool for education, information, opinion, communication and social participation.
We are convinced that with us all working together this can be achieved.
With the aim of making ourselves known and popularizing the Internet, in 1999 we opened a free email service for everyone. Later we also offered web space. Hundreds and hundreds of users took advantage of the service for many years.
In 2000 we held the first edition of the “Premi Web”, a web page competition with the aim of promoting content related to the culture and economy of the Islands on the Internet.
For ten years, the competition grew and consolidated its recognition, especially due to the prestige of the jury members: Antonio Fernández Coca, Bel Llodrà , Joan Mayans and Esperança Camps, among other experts in information technology.
The last edition took place in 2010 with an event at Bellver Castle that was attended by 300 people.
In 2004 we launched a blogging platform that allowed users without technical knowledge to publish content on the Internet. It also had a community portal where the latest contributions from users’ blogs were displayed. It was very innovative and was very well received. Social networks like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter… did not exist yet.
MallorcaWeb grew to become BalearWeb, the header that grouped and provided common services to MallorcaWeb, MenorcaWeb, EivissaWeb and FormenteraWeb. Thousands of news items, reports, geolocated photos, etc. were published. A weekly e-mail newsletter was sent to thousands of subscribers.
Since 2010, we have focused on website creation and maintenance services for clients and we continue with the same energy and values from the beginning.
Some of our clients started their Internet presence with us back in 1997 and still trust MallorcaWeb SL: Hotel Cala Fornells, Salut i Força, Easy Boats… Others joined our esteemed client portfolio later, such as Marivent Yachts, CBM Marine, Son Penyaflor or Balearic Council for Ecological Agricultural Production.
Although most of our clients have been with us for many years, we love to make new ones and are excited by challenges. Explore some of our current projects or request a quote.
